Anthony Hopkins collects a fat paycheck, shows up to the set and does what the director tells him to do in the new exorcism thriller “The Rite”. Hopkins shouts most of his lines, fighting to be heard over a bombastic soundtrack of “gotcha” moments designed to test the limits of subwoofers everywhere.Hopkins screams every exorcism cliché imaginable including “I cast you out” which, coincidentally, is a line he performs much better in the trailer for next summer’s “Thor”.

What I find hard to understand is that with so many recent remakes of classics, such as “Psycho”, “The Omen” and “True Grit”, why doesn’t somebody simply do a remake of William Peter Blatty’s original “Exorcist” instead of constantly trying to reinvent it? You can’t really improve upon William Friedkin’s 40-year old classic film version, but at least the story is far better than those offered in so many of the recent exorcism thrillers.
Arriving in the January Junkyard of films made with December awards-bait aspirations, “The Rite” obviously had higher hopes of being seen as something more than a mainstream popcorn movie because at least half the film is spoken in Italian with English subtitles. Beware mainstream audiences who refuse to see foreign-language films!
The plot involves a young priest attending exorcism school where he is selected to be privately mentored by a top exorcist in Rome, played by Hopkins. From there all hell breaks loose (pun definitely intended). It’s too bad that the movie is just deadly dull.
